Stage 1 :Research - NGV visit
Charles Eames, Jr (June 17, 1907 – August 21, 1978) from St. Loius, Missouri, with his partner, Ray Eames, were among the most important and influential designers in post-war America. Based in California from the 1950s, They worked extensively with moulded plywood and plastic, producing supremely comfortable sculptural seating furniture The lounge Chair 670 is a classic of tewntieth centruy design which combinte the streamined elegance of the plywood, softened with the padded leather seat.
The lounge chair 670 is composed by three curved plywood shells which are made up of seven thin layers of wood veneer glued together and shaped under heat and pressure. It is used Brazilian rosewood veneers and were constructed of five layers of plywood.. The shells and the seat cushions are essentially to be shape at the same size: composed of two curved forms interlocking to form a solid mass. The chair back and headrest are identical in proportion.
The backrest and headrest are screwed together by a pair of aluminum supports. This unit is suspended on the seat via two connection points in the armrests and the armrests are screwed to shock mounts on the interior of the backrest shell, that’s allowing the backrest and headrest to flex when someone is sitting on it. The rubber washers are solidly glued to the plywood shells. But have been known to tear free when excessive weight is applied, or when the rubber becomes old and brittle and need to change to new one.
The seat cushions are sewn with a zipper around the outer edge connects them to a stiff plastic backing. The chair has a low seat which is fixed at a recline. The seat of the chair swivels on a cast aluminum base, with glides that are threaded so that the chair may remain level.

Furniture Purchased
R 1 - Chair Purchased
This chair was purchased from a dining set wholesale furniture shop in Hoppers Crossing. A classical style dining chair. Costed 50 Aussie dolar. Come in brown color with green-blue cushion seat cover. It was imported from Malaysia. According to the factory said it used the local hardwood which name MERBAU to produced this furniture and export to worldwide. Which hardwood only plantation in the forest of Malaysia or Philippine or Indonesia.
This chair very solid and the joinery of the furniture very sticky as the manufacturer used PVA white glue and long screws to screw up the joinery. The whole chair was assembled by several piece of timber wood which only made by machine. The chair been polished and paint by polish oil to keep the original texture of the timber wood and make it look shining. The cushion, rectangle shape cover by green-blue clothes, was screwed on the structure of the timber wood of the chair and allowed to re-change or re-new by users.
As the material used and the method of joinery, I think this chair could be used over 20 years. It is a long life time product.
The weakness points of this chair was come in whole piece and unable to disassembled or store up easily. Rather than some assembly furniture allow to assemble and easily to store up especially it does not occupied the space when does not use it. Secondly is the weight quite heavy for a person to carry for durable time.
